Greetings from Host Museum

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, it is our great honour to extend a warm invitation to you to participate in the 2026 Symposium on Chinese Export Art, to be held this October in Hong Kong.
This year’s symposium builds on the success of the 2025 symposium organised and held at the School of Art and Archaeology of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, where leading scholars and researchers came together to share their research and knowledge.
We are extremely lucky to be collaborating with Department of Chinese and History at City University, Hong Kong. This collaboration underscores the strong bonds between the Museum and Hong Kong’s academic community, where our different specialism come together to create a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences.
The symposium encourages an international dialogue through its themes that cover the global circulation and adaption of Chinese export art, its context within other competing markets exporting art objects to the West, and the economics behind the networks and patronage that facilitated the movement of materials and desirable objects across the oceans. We encourage new researchers to take part, using this as an opportunity to engage with established academics in the field.
We sincerely invite you to join us in this symposium to connect with distinguished experts, scholars, and cultural leaders from around the globe. Your participation will not only enhance the event but will also contribute significantly to the advancement of research in this fascinating subject that blends history, art and science through the lens of Chinese export art.
Let us gather this October in the amazingly unique city of Hong Kong to celebrate this extraordinary intellectual and cultural event. We look forward to engaging with you, exchanging ideas, and working together to write a new chapter in developing our understanding of Chinese export art and its many global links.
Warm regards,
Richard Kendall
Director & Chief Executive
