Mariana ZEGIANINI

Associate Professor, Arts of Asia, IFIKK (Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas), Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo

Mariana Zegianini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Oslo where she teaches Chinese art in a global context. Before joining UiO in August 2025, Mariana was a Lecturer at SOAS and an Associate Lecturer at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Mariana’s research expands from transcultural histories of material culture – she participated in the City University of Hong Kong conference Unfolding the Coromandel Screen – to Chinese portrait painting. She is currently working on an edited volume titled Portraiture in Asia: Making the Subject (Manchester University Press) and she has also been invited to guest edit the Special Issue ‘The Art of Portraiture in China’ of the Bulletin of SOAS (Cambridge University Press). Alongside these projects, she is also working on the manuscript titled Bodies that Move: ACect and Portraiture in Early Modern China which explores how painted, printed and literary portraits shaped the understanding of a^ect and emotions during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in China.
