Maria KARAGEORGE
Maria Karageorge is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, researching the history of the mantón de Manila, an internationally popular dress accessory exported from China in the nineteenth century. Drawing on histories of making, textiles, and craftsmanship, her work amplifies the contributions of Chinese artisans to global histories of dress. Her 2021 Honours thesis (University of Sydney), for which she was awarded the Best Asian Art Thesis award for her cohort, explored pictorial modernisms in reverse-glass paintings. She has taught courses on Export Art, Fashion History, and Asian Contemporary Art.
