Lucie OLIVOVA

Lucie Olivová, PhD, graduated in Chinese Philology and General History, then she lived four years in Beijing. Afterwards, she obtained her M.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley (1988) and her Ph.D. degree from Charles University, Prague (1998). Her career culminated as Associate Professor in 2008, when she taught in the Department of Chinese Studies at Palacky University, Olomouc (Czech Rep.). She gave courses on Classical Chinese Literature, History of Chinese Art, and Cultural Anthropology of traditional China. Prior to that she she also acted as the curator of Chinese paintings and calligraphy at the National Gallery at Prague (from1993 to 1995), and staged several exhibitions.

Her main research interests in the recent years are the mutual influences in European and Chinese art in the 18th century: the understudied Chinoiserie in Bohemia in particular. She also published about Jesuit painters at the Chinese court, on urban culture in Yangzhou during the Qianlong period etc. In addition to scholarly articles, she also translated into Czech a number of Chinese classical and modern literary works. She is now retired, and active as a free lance scholar.
