Caitlin Karyadi is assistant professor in the Department of Art History at The University of Hong Kong. She is a historian of Japanese art and visual culture, specializing in early modern Japanese imagery and its transregional contexts. Her current book project, Nanpin: Chinese Painting and Japanese Art History, re-evaluates processes of canonization across premodern East Asia through the example of the Chinese painter Shen Quan (1682–ca. 1760) and his outsized Japanese legacy. She is also working on a history of exchange in the visual arts across East and Southeast Asia in the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, proposing a littoral framework for the region. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University’s Department of Art & Archaeology in 2024. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Foundation, Japan Foundation, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, and Bei Shan Tang Foundation, among others.
