Special Announcement - Redevelopment of B Deck Galleries
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) is embarking on an exciting redevelopment of its B Deck galleries to create a more welcoming, engaging and inspiring visitor experience. The programme will introduce a new Reception area, a multi-purpose Victoria Harbour Gallery with panoramic harbour views, and refreshed galleries exploring Hong Kong’s maritime history, port and communities. To support these improvements, sections of B Deck will close in phases between September and November 2026, with further redevelopment continuing afterwards. The Museum's main entrance will temporarily move but will be clearly signposted. Uniquely, visitors will have an opportunity to see normally behind the scenes activities, as museum staff and specialist contractors carefully moving display cases and objects to temporary locations in preparation for the final gallery displays in 2027.
The Museum will remain open throughout the redevelopment. Visitors can continue to enjoy the remaining galleries on B Deck, the Swire Marine Discovery Centre on A Deck, the four permanent galleries on C Deck, regular public programmes in the Blue Ocean Hall, weekend guided tours, and the rooftop Museum Café with its spectacular harbour views. When will the redevelopment take place?
The redevelopment will take place in phases from September to November 2026. A second phase of gallery redevelopment and visitor enhancement will take place during 2027.

Will the Museum remain open during the redevelopment?
Yes. The Museum will remain open throughout the redevelopment period, and visitors can continue to enjoy many of our galleries, exhibitions, programmes, and facilities.

Which gallery areas will be affected?
Parts of the B Deck galleries will be temporarily closed, but the Museum will keep as much of B Deck open as possible during the redevelopment works.

Will the Museum entrance be affected?
The Reception area will temporarily move to the other side of the walkway in September, before moving back to the current entrance in October. These temporary changes will be clearly indicated with directional signage and staff assistance.

What else can visitors expect during the redevelopment?
Visitors may have the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes museum work as curators and contractors carefully relocate artefacts and display cases as part of the redevelopment process.
Some display cases may be temporarily empty while objects are being moved and reinstalled. This is a normal museum practice designed to ensure the safe handling and protection of the collection.
In addition, Galleries B1 and B2 will feature additional artefacts and display cases as part of interim displays, offering visitors more opportunities to explore Hong Kong’s maritime heritage during the redevelopment period.

Yes. Weekend docent-led guided tours will continue as scheduled.

Yes. Regular public programmes in the Blue Ocean Hall will continue during the redevelopment period.
