Full Steam Ahead: Hong Kong Harbour and Foreshore Photos – 1940s to 1970s

Language: English

Abstract:

This photo talk captures the enormous changes on and around Hong Kong’s harbour from the 1940s to the 1970s. During this period, despite many challenges, Hong Kong went “full steam ahead”. The society and economy were transformed from the post-war battered place into the increasingly rapidly growing – and ever faster changing – territory.

Given Hong Kong’s role as a port city, this metamorphosis was seen very clearly in its maritime life. This talk’s photographs, taken by Hedda Morrison, Lee Fook Chee and Brian Brake, are from the exhibition Recovery, Resilience, Resurgence – originated by The Photographic Heritage Foundation. Those photos will be complemented by images from the Hong Kong Maritime Museum’s exhibition Maritime Miracle.

Edward Stokes’ linking historical and maritime narrative will engage the audience with a sense of the times; Hong Kong’s ability to adapt and overcome difficulties; the vitality of its people; together with some personal reflections of Ed growing up in Hong Kong during those years, with family connections to ships and the sea.
