About the Event

Located in the northeastern waters of the New Territories, Kat O was once a community with a thriving fishing industry. The island is also home to the Hakka people and boat dwellers. Through chance encounters, residents of the island became involved in pearl cultivation and were even invited to share their techniques overseas. However, as the pearl cultivation industry declined, the farms in Kat O ceased operation and now lie in a state of dereliction.

Riding the waves of rural conservation efforts, Dr. Desmond Wong, Senior Conservation Manager (Cultural Heritage) of the Conservancy Association, explores the possibility of revitalising the pearl cultivation industry in Kat O in this talk.
