About the Event

Sponsored by The Caravel Group, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) offers free admission and a series of family activities on Sunday 24 March 2024, in time for the Museum’s brand-new special exhibition ‘Across Victoria Harbour’.

The ‘Across Victoria Harbour’ special exhibition tells the unique story of Victoria Harbour through the history of vessels that traversed its waters, including passenger vessels such as sampans, ferries, motorboats, as well as working vessels like lighters, tugboats, and barges. On The Caravel Group Free Admission Day, visitors can enjoy a myriad of fun activities including a marine cartoon screening, activity worksheets and storybooks for children, marine wildlife talks, guided tours and a ‘Twenty Questions’ talk on the exhibition, and an interactive element including a simulator experience. a range of exquisite souvenirs will also be available on the day.

The special exhibition, which is also free to enter on the day, features a captivating collection of vintage Hong Kong photos, paintings, historical documents, and ship models, offering its audience a glimpse into the past. Interactive elements will also enhance visitors’ experience of the exhibition. A life-size reconstruction of the old motorboat ticket booth will enable visitors to take a sentimental photo with Victoria Harbour as its backdrop, while the multimedia game ‘Travel by Walla-Walla’ will allow the audience to step back in time and relive the nostalgia of chartering a motorboat in the bygone era.

Through the Twenty Questions about the ‘Across Victoria Harbour’ Talk and guided tours on the free admission day, visitors can delve deeper into the exhibition content, curatorial concept, and uncover the hidden stories behind the exhibits of the special exhibition.

In addition to the rich history and culture of cross-harbour vessels, the free admission day offers a variety of marine science elements and maritime knowledge suitable for all ages. Parents can bring their children to enjoy the marine cartoon screening, receive storybooks, complete children's activity worksheets, and receive exquisite souvenirs. They can also participate in a marine wildlife talk to learn about different marine ecologies, special marine animals, and their habits. Furthermore, the Ship Bridge Simulator will be opened on that day, allowing visitors to steer a variety of ships, and learn the various roles of seafarers in the simulator to experience an immersive and authentic ‘sea journey’ through Hong Kong waters and the Victoria Harbour waterfront!

The exhibition will run until 15 May 2024.

Tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before each session starts at the front desk, on a first come first served basis while stocks last.

Each visitor can only participate in one session. All tickets have to be collected in person and cannot be collected for someone else.

1. Simulator Experience

The experience allows visitors to steer a variety of ships including container barge, high-speed boat or even the famous historic Star Ferry, and learn the various roles of seafarers in the simulator to experience an immersive and authentic ‘sea journey’ through Hong Kong waters and the Victoria Harbour waterfront!

Location: Ship Bridge Simulator, A Deck, Hong Kong Maritime Museum

3 sessions of approx. 1 hour each.

Session 1: 11:00 – 12:00

Session 2: 14:00 – 15:00

2. Marine Cartoon Screening

A series of interesting marine-related cartoons will be screened to arouse children's interest in learning about marine science and conservation.

Location: Blue Ocean Hall, A Deck, Hong Kong Maritime Museum

Time: 10:00 – 14:00 | 15:00 – 16:00

3. Distribution of Activity Worksheets and Storybooks for Children

Marine animal worksheets and storybooks are provided to children to learn more about marine environment and maritime history.

Location: Long Gallery, B Deck, Hong Kong Maritime Museum

Time: 10:00 – 18:00

4. Marine Wildlife Talk: Where do the animals live? (Cantonese only)

The Marine Science Program Manager of the Museum will talk about different marine ecologies and introduce special marine animals and their habits.

5. Twenty Questions about “Across Victoria Harbour” Talk (Cantonese only)

Join us in this sharing session presented by Ms. Millie Lai, Associate Curator, with guests Mr. Choi Kim Lui, JP, Life President of MBTA, and Mr. Law Lap Keung, Assistant Director (Planning & Services) of the Marine Department. Together, we will delve deeper into the curatorial concept and uncover the hidden stories behind the exhibits of the special exhibition "Across Victoria Harbour.

6. Guided Tours

Guided tours of permanent exhibition and special exhibition ‘Across Victoria Harbour’ led by experienced guides help to explain the maritime history, culture, and heritage to the public.
