About the Event

Sea Turtles face many threats globally and locally, including fishing gear entanglement, vessel collision, habitat degradation, marine pollution, and illegal trade in turtle products. Climate change is also a growing concern, as rising sea levels and ocean temperatures are affecting the species’ nesting beaches and altering their food sources.

Green Sea Turtle is a species of sea turtles widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the world. They are known for long migrations, often traveling thousands of kilometers between their natal beaches and foraging grounds. Sea turtles found in Hong Kong can travel as far as to the South China Sea and Southeast Asia, and are often sighted in eastern and southern waters of Hong Kong in warm seasons.

In celebration of this year’s World Sea Turtle Day (16 June), Hong Kong Maritime Museum will co-organize with Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab of the City University of Hong Kong…
