About the Event

Many of Hong Kong’s deity festivals and communal rituals are organized by water-based communities. In these ceremonial practices, festive paper craft structures are not only visual highlights but also serve as vital mediums connecting the human world with the divine. These intricate creations are traditionally crafted by skilled paper artisans and ritual specialists.

Today, festive paper craft has been inscribed on Hong Kong’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This lecture will introduce the common types of paper ritual objects used in fisherfolk ceremonies, while examining their ritual functions and symbolic meanings.
