About the Event

Turns out opium can be medicinal?

The pharmaceutical historian and author, Patrick Chiu, (Manchu name Irgen Gioro) explores how the Maritime Silk Road influenced China’s religion, cuisine, and fashion since the Tang dynasty, yet left pharmacy untouched. The talk also examines how the 19th-century opium and proprietary medicines transformed Chinese pharmaceutical practices, creating a turning point for integration between Eastern and Western medical traditions.
