Message from the Director

For 10 years the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has delighted visitors from all over the world. Patrons have a passion for history and exploration, an interest in seafaring, or simply want to learn more about a subject they may not be familiar with.  For those who have yet to visit, there is much to see, do, hear, smell and feel, so plan on at least an hour to explore 4,400 square metres of Hong Kong’s unique maritime heritage. For our many fans, thank you for coming back again and again with family, friends and spreading the word to others about what an “eye opening” experience a visit can be.

Our location at Pier 8 is a unique asset that has become even more appealing as the Central Harbour Waterfront Promenade is now fully activated. Since re-opening, more than 150,000 visitors have come through our doors and enjoyed:

  • Six temporary exhibitions covering historic photography, seventeenth century cartography and twentieth century cruise passenger travel, among others;

  • Highly successful public and education programming that has reached more than 7,600 students visiting from nearly 125 schools, a weekend lecture series attended by 585 adults and 1,700 family activity participants; and

  • The opening of our rooftop Café 8, a Nesbitt Centre social enterprise.

While these statistics are compelling, the heart of what we do is to collect, conserve, research, and participate in the dialogue about maritime and shipping issues. With more than 1,200 objects on display, 30 interactive panels and a resource centre housing more than 2,000 reference materials we have something for scholars, students, historians and anyone with a thirst for learning.

As the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has evolved, it has done so under the stewardship of many. Former directors and curators, experts in their field; the financial support of hundreds of Asia’s most influential shipping, support and service companies; and hardworking, dedicated employees. We thrive on what we do and enjoy being one of “Hong Kong’s newest and perhaps most vibrant cultural institutions.”

Join us and explore. We look forward to welcoming you.
