Shanghai-born shipowner Tung Chao‑Yung (1912–1982), founder of Chinese Maritime Transport, Island Navigation, and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), rose from humble origins to become a global pioneer of container shipping. By his death, he had built a vast fleet spanning passenger liners, bulk carriers, tankers, and container ships, with interests extending to terminals, dockyards, banking, and real estate.
This biography traces his path from a junior executive in the 1930s to one of the world’s leading private shipowners, highlighting his foresight, adaptability, strategic acumen, and philanthropy. It also follows the Group’s navigation of the later financial crises, the advent of globalization, the maturing of supply chain management, and situates the family’s legacy within the broader evolution of shipping in China and the World.
Join authors Howard Dick and Stephen Kentwell, in conversation with Christine Loh (Moderator), for an engaging discussion on Tung’s life…
