Pacific Basin Free Family Fun Day

Hong Kong Maritime Museum offers Free Admission to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer

The annual “Day of the Seafarer” was established by the International Maritime Organization in 2010, as a tribute to the 1.6 million seafarers around the world for their essential contribution to world trade and the global economy.

To commemorate this meaningful day, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum will open its doors for free on 27 June 2021 (Sunday), to show appreciation of the seafarers and celebrate this occasion with the public.

The event is sponsored by Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping Limited, one of the world’s leading owners and operators of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk vessels; and supported by the Hong Kong Seamen's Union. Game booths will be set up for children and their families to interact with the Union’s youth volunteers and learn about the life of a seafarer. Visitors can collect and make their own postcards as souvenirs of the day. In addition, documentary screenings and sharing sessions will be held for visitors to meet and learn from young cadets and experienced seafarers from both Pacific Basin and the Seamen’s Union. Two special exhibitions are also on show, "Maritime Crossroads: Millenia of Global Trade in Hong Kong" and "Sailor-Made: Manifestations of Nautical Fashion in Hong Kong Culture", both feature exhibits about the history of seafarers' life and work.

The programmes aim to enable the public to understand the work of the seafarers and to discover about the treasures of Hong Kong and international maritime history. The museum also offers bilingual guided tours.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the museum will implement admission quota and special precautionary measures to help ensure public safety.
