Asian trade during the early modern era not only linked Europe to Asia, but also led to the rise of trade ports. In the long history of maritime trade, Canton was one of the most significant cosmopolitan cities in the world and also the most famous Chinese city to Europeans. This can be shown from the literature and the images which appeared on Chinese export art objects. Using a Chinese export lacquer screen in the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and other Chinese export art objects, the speaker will talk about the messages hidden behind the images.
